Q. Why Do Some Conventions and Basketry Classes Seem to Cost So Much?
A. Your Gourd and Basket Weekend Committee has been working diligently to put together 2019's Weekend in the Garden. This article is an attempt to briefly describe what the class fee covers and why it differs so greatly among different instructors.
As the reputation of the MWGBG has grown, we have begun to attract teachers of national and international reputation to participate in our Weekend. Many in 2019’s lineup come from great distances; some provide materials such as cedar and birch bark requiring an unbelievable amount of preparation time and effort.
Your registration and materials fees cover such things as cost of materials, their collection, preparation, instruction sheets, tools, and shipping costs, and other supplies that your instructor may provide as well as helping to defray their travel expenses. In an attempt to keep costs down as much as possible, guild members often offer to host out of town instructors. Some of our local instructors charge less, because they do not have food and lodging issues like those from outside of our area; their class fees tend to reflect materials and tools provided by the instructor.
These fees also help pay the Garden for sponsoring the event, the printing and mailing of the post card, staff expenses for processing the registration of students, rental of facilities, set-up time, take-down time and so forth.
