Artist’s Statement: The sculpture is inspired by the life-force contained by a tree. It is this mysterious inner impulse that drives the sap upward towards the light. The energy of this aspiration is manifested in all forms of life in a spiraling motion and is the strand connecting us all.

Artist’s Bio: Alber De Matteis was born in 1957 in Paris, France. In 1976 he left France and travelled extensively around the world. After experiencing many cultures, he settled In San Diego in 1986 where he began his career as an Artist.

He became a US citizen in 1994. For the last 25 years he has created numerous Public Projects around San Diego, California and the world. “When I start a sculpture, working with my hands, I leave behind the reasoning and the feelings that propelled me, and let the vital force guide me from within. Each sculpture is a personal attempt to find peace and balance and to offer it to the world. Abstraction and imaginary forms are more suited for my visual language. I feel they allow me to explore more deeply the primordial forces that shape our world. I am always looking for the marriage of material and space, to mingle and make them inseparable, one from another, as are the body and the spirit.”
